my dad is a jw and has recently been diagnosed with chondrosarcoma (type of bone cancer), the oncologist says the only way to treat this is to cut off his leg and part of his pelvic bone.
since he will not accept blood transfusion, the doctor will not perform the surgery because of the high risk of him not making it through the surgery.
he has found an alternative doctor that has given him a lot of hope and started him on a natural chemo, various vitamins and a nutritional plan.
If the consensus of informed medical opinion is that your father should have surgery - that is probably what he should do - even if these means that blood transfusions are necessary. It might be possible to arrange for this surgery to take place in a facility where Hemopure or Polyheme are being tested and a viable alternative for JWs since the WTS now permits the use of hemoglobin solution.

someone sent me an interesting article that i would like to share.
granted, it is very lengthy, but worth the read.
dr. kradjian maintains that "...all cows' milk contains blood!
Now you can see why they homogenize milk in most places. As for strong bones - do cows drink milk - is
that the source of their calcium? Kind of a silly argument unless you can't get access to plentiful supply
of vegetables that contain calcium.
The WTS has known for year that milk contains a large amount of white cells. You'd get fewer white cells
in an organ transplant. The interesting thing is that this is one of the "formed elements" that the WTS continues
to ban. The obvious implication is that God would not break his own law by having white cells in breast milk.
Yet the WTS would deny the smallest of the formed elements, platelets, which forces JW children with
leukemia to discontinue their chemotherapy. What an utterly stupid policy - no pun intended.

'this is my chance to speak out' - jehovah's witness

There are no simple answers about such complex matters. It seems clear in my mind that the vast majority of JW teenagers (mature minors) cannot comprehend the complex issues in these situations. They are acting on misinformation that has been carefully instilled by both their JW parents and the WTS society. There is also a measure of coercion involved. That said, I also believe that some of these JW youngsters sincerely believe that God does require they reject the WTS current list of banned blood products (the list changes regularly as we have documented at http://www.ajwrb.org/watchtower/data1.shtml )
One of the things I am personally troubled by is the fact that so many JW children eventually leave the religion anyway - my best estimate is 2/3. The implication is that the vast majority of JW children who die supporting the WTS position on blood would probably have elected to leave the faith voluntarily if they had simply lived long enough to gather additional information and make some objective conclusions - usually in their early 20's. These factors make the courts decision very difficult but it appears that judges usually make the correct call in my view. The reckless and inconsistent nature of WT policy will become increasingly clear to outside observers when JWs begin using bovine and human hemoglobin in the near future where available - yet deny the use of red cells where hemoglobin solutions are not available. (Red cells are 97% hemoglobin).

Biopure Receives FDA Response to Hemopure(R) Marketing Application
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Biopure Corporation (Nasdaq:
BPUR) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has
completed its review of the company's biologic license application (BLA) for
Hemopure(R) [hemoglobin glutamer - 250 (bovine)] and issued a letter requesting
additional information. The letter focuses primarily on clarification of clinical and
preclinical data and includes some comments on labeling. It does not request additional
clinical trials. Biopure has applied to market Hemopure in the United States for the
treatment of acutely anemic adult patients undergoing orthopedic surgery and for the
elimination or reduction of red blood cell transfusions in these patients.
With 30 days remaining in the original BLA review cycle, the issuance of the letter has
suspended the FDA review clock until Biopure submits a complete response.
"We're encouraged that the FDA has finished its review and provided comprehensive
feedback in advance of the formal action due date. By maintaining thirty days on the
review clock, the FDA is encouraging us to work with them to complete the approval
process as quickly as possible," said Biopure President and CEO Thomas A. Moore.
"We'll work with the Agency to address the remaining questions and will provide our
answers as expeditiously as possible."
Anemia is a shortage of RBCs in the body that can create an oxygen deficit and lead to
cell damage, organ dysfunction or, in severe cases, death. Acute anemia, usually
caused by blood loss, is the primary indication for a RBC transfusion. In 1999,
approximately 1.4 million RBC units were transfused in 500,000 high blood loss
orthopedic surgical procedures.* These statistics are expected to increase as the
population ages.
Hemopure is an oxygen therapeutic, or drug, consisting of chemically stabilized bovine
hemoglobin formulated in a balanced salt solution. This stabilized, acellular hemoglobin
circulates directly in plasma (the fluid part of blood) when administered intravenously,
increasing oxygen delivery and diffusion. The product is compatible with all blood types,
is stable for three years at room temperature (2 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius), and is
purified through patented and proprietary techniques that are validated to remove
potential contaminants.
Biopure Corporation
Biopure Corporation, headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., is the leading manufacturer
and marketer of oxygen therapeutics, a new class of drugs that are intravenously
administered to deliver oxygen to the body's tissues for the treatment of acute surgical
anemia and other potential medical applications. Hemopure(R) [hemoglobin glutamer -
200 (bovine)] is approved in South Africa for the treatment of acutely anemic surgical
patients and for eliminating, delaying or reducing the need for red blood cell
transfusion in these patients. The company's veterinary product, Oxyglobin(R)
[hemoglobin glutamer - (200 bovine)], is a similar oxygen therapeutic approved in the
United States and European Union for the treatment of anemia in dogs.

i would be interested in hearing a few.
for the life of me (pun intended) i can't think of any good ones.. robyn
I recently asked a friend "What is the meaning of life" simply being cute. "Bob" is probably the sharpest knife in the drawer. He wrote back, "there is no meaning - that's the joke." No one knows what is really going on with this existence - beyond the obvious sort of things. Beliefs maybe wild speculation - but they are important nonetheless. If your beliefs comfort you, they have utility. Do you find it usful to believe that there are no real reasons to go on living? I doubt that very much. Believe something that comforts and makes sense to you. Don't worry about what someone else believes.
Did you see the movie "City Slickers" a few years ago? Remember Billy Crystal trying to get back his smile and the old cowboy asked him if he knew the secret to life? The secret was "one thing" and Billy Crystal's character had to figure out what that one thing was. That's the way it is for all of us.
A pretty good place to start is to go help someone who is worse off than you are. You'll feel needed and make the world a better place in the process. My dad is one of the happiest people I know - and still a JW I might add. He spends most of his day driving around to help different family members and friends. Getting out of the house and getting involved with other people did the trick for him. Others have posted what works for them but you hold the key. You ascertain the "real reasons" to go on living. What makes you happy? What do you enjoy? What are your best memories? Who would you like to see? Where would you like to go? What would you like to eat next?
Life is over all too fast anyway, don't you think? I'm hoping you'll find some reasons that make sense to you!
Keep Smilin'
